This Summer Is on Track to Be the Hottest on Record — Again

For the third consecutive year, the planet is on track to record its hottest summer in the modern observational record, according to preliminary data released this week by the Global Climate Monitoring Centre in Geneva. Public health officials are sounding alarms that, they say, are still not being taken seriously enough. Heat-related emergency room visits in the United States are running 40% above the five-year average, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control. In Europe, preliminary mortality data suggest that excess deaths attributable to heat this summer could surpass the grim toll of 2023, which itself was described at the time as unprecedented. The victims are disproportionately elderly, outdoor workers, and people without access to air conditioning — a distribution that underscores the extent to which extreme heat is a crisis of inequality.

"Heat is the deadliest weather phenomenon we face, and it is the one we are least prepared for," said Dr. Marcus Otieno, an epidemiologist at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. "Hurricanes and floods get the headlines because they are dramatic and visible. Heat kills quietly — in apartments, in fields, in cities where the built environment amplifies the temperature and the most vulnerable have nowhere to go."

The climate science behind the trend is, at this point, unambiguous. The succession of record-breaking years reflects a combination of long-term greenhouse-gas-driven warming and shorter-term variability, including the residual effects of a strong El Niño event that peaked in late 2024 and has since transitioned to neutral conditions. Even with El Niño fading, the underlying warming trend is strong enough to push temperatures into new territory. "We have entered a phase where records are not surprises," Lindström said. "They are the expected outcome of the physics."

Whether this summer ultimately claims the formal record will depend on the readings through August and September, but the trajectory leaves little room for doubt. The five hottest summers in recorded history have now all occurred within the past six years, and each has been hotter than the last. For policymakers, the question is no longer whether the planet is warming — that debate has been settled by the thermometer — but whether the pace of adaptation can keep up with the pace of change. The evidence so far this summer suggests it cannot.
