Whether the numbers ultimately reach the top of the forecast range will depend on factors that remain unknowable, but the message from forecasters is unambiguous: this is a season to take seriously.
"Forecasts tell you about probability, not certainty," Vasquez said. "You can have a hyperactive season where every storm misses populated areas, or a quiet season where a single storm hits a major city and becomes a disaster. What we can say is that the odds of a significant landfall are elevated this year, and the time to prepare is before the storm has a name, not after."
